With the return of extreme temperatures across much of France, the IFCE (French Horse and Riding Institute) is reminding everyone of best practices for protecting the well-being of horses during heat waves. Above 25°C, the equine body activates its cooling mechanisms: sweating and hyperventilation become intense, particularly during exertion or in high humidity.
The institute first recommends ensuring constant access to clean, fresh water, supplemented by shaded areas essential for horses in the pasture. Riders should reschedule their rides for cooler hours, early morning or late afternoon, while remaining attentive to signs of overheating: excessive sweating, abnormal breathing, or slow recovery.
After exercise, a thorough shower is the most effective way to dissipate accumulated body heat. Regarding transport, 2019 regulations prohibit the road transport of animals between 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. in areas under orange or red alert, except for small groups of no more than three equines or air-conditioned vehicles. This season, caution remains advised for all equine transport.
